“Employers have more to do to bridge the gap between the classroom and the world of work if British business is to find the talent, creativity and skills needed for our future.

“Many companies already offer work experience, but it's now more important than ever for young people’s first taste of work to be as relevant, meaningful and inspiring as possible.”

Turning Work Experience into Work Inspiration

Offering relevant, meaningful and inspiring work experience has never been so important and it’s just got much easier! Take a look at the new site to find all the resources you’ll need and ways of ensuring you capture the benefits to your own employees and while you’re there, sign up to the Work Inspiration campaign and join hundreds of other employers committing to turn work experience into work inspiration.

Many companies already offer work placements to help young people prepare for the world of work. The Work Inspiration campaign, led by Sir Stuart Rose, Chairman of Business in the Community is urging employers to rethink and improve what they offer and, in partnership with employers and education organisations across the country, are determined to make it as easy as possible to do just that. The new Work Inspiration Employer Toolkit includes interactive resources developed by employers and brought to life by our technology partner, U-Explore. Please take a look particularly at the Three Insights - three simple ideas that, when used as part of your programme can really make a difference to both the young person and staff who volunteer to host them.

We would love to know what you think so please let us know by using the feedback button on the site and most importantly we hope you will show your support by joining the campaign and become a Work Inspiration Employer.

BT REVEALS JOB TRAINING AND WORK PLACEMENT SCHEMES

BT today set out measures it is taking to help young people into work along with initiatives to ensure that those in employment receive certification through work training schemes. The measures have the potential to assist more than 10,000 people and therefore support the aims of the “Backing Young Britain” campaign.

The company, which is one of the UK’s largest employers, is working closely with other employers and Business in the Community (BiTC) on a new initiative, Work Inspiration. This scheme will see approximately 3,000 young people gain improved work placements with BT. These placements will provide those people with an insight into the world of work and help them decide which career they want to pursue.

BT also revealed it has already launched a major training programme that will see more than 7,200 of its contact centre employees undertake accredited learning and receive an Apprenticeship certificate. This training programme is in addition to BT’s apprenticeship scheme which sees hundreds of young people recruited every year. The programme will see BT become one of the top five private sector providers of Apprenticeship Frameworks. Sir Michael Rake, BT Chairman, said: “We are very keen that young people have the chance to spend time with BT before they embark on their careers. Work placements can help young people decide where their future lies and so this improved scheme has our full support. We are also keen that our employees receive training and so can gain apprenticeship qualifications.

We do this because it is good for our business, it is good for our employees and it is good for young people. We are proud to be a Work Inspiration employer and proud to support Backing Young Britain.”
